The Book of Destiny (D&D)

This story is about a group of people who are sent to steal an artifact with the intention of aiding his friend, the king. There’s journey to distant lands, fighting, and something for the players puzzle out during the game. This story should also be relatively short to run; I think it should take one long gaming session (~8 hours) to get through, but individual experiences may vary. The name of the campaign setting is Fortuna and any other materials I write for it should be marked so.

The idea that spawned this story I had while reading the Sandman series by Neil Gaiman. They are an excellent set of comic books (or graphic novels as some might call them) and I recommend you read them. If you have the money, buy them, if you don’t you should make friends with someone who has them and borrow them.

This campaign is designed for effective character level (ECL) 8 player characters and should be easy to integrate into any game you are already running with only the changing of a few names. It will be using the Dungeons and Dragons 3.5 edition rules and you should be able to get by with what you find in the System Reference Document (SRD) 3.5 on the web. It would be handy to have a Dungeon Masters Guide, a Monster Manual, or a Players Handbook while you play but I’m going to write this so you hopefully don’t need them. You will probably need the standard set of dice for a d20 game, your character sheet, and pencils and paper are also of use in a game of this type.

To view the whole story, just download the word document. There also is a map to download to give you an idea of the lay of the land. If I make any updates the document with the highest number following the name is the most recent.

This story is free to copy and print for all who want to run it with their friends. It is not to be used to make money.

You may send feedback to: talesoftom at gmail.com but I can’t promise to get back to you; that depends on how busy I am. Any helpful critiques are welcome.

Protharsus.com now features Exalted

"Rescue from the Wyld Hunt" is a short story (as in game material) in the Exalted system written by my friend Andrew. I've never played Exalted before, so I'm not the best person to summarize the story, but it was enjoyable.

D&D Stat Roller and Dungeon Generator

Please check out the cool scripting work my friend Louis did. The Stat Roller quickly became a crowd favorite, let's see if the Dungeon Generator draws the same response!

WoD "A Treatise on the Maturation of the Descendants of Cain in Two Parts"

"A Treatise on the Maturation of the Descendants of Cain in Two Parts" by Jonathan Abraham Montgomery is a little project I undertook while reminiscing about my all-time favorite WoD Vampire game. J.A. Montgomery was never a character in the game, but I took a little creative license. The "Treatise" is written from the perspective of a nineteenth century ghoul of my friend's vampire character who was loaned to my character for a couple of decades. In "Part One: Observations," J.A.M. recalls how he was introduced to the World of Darkness and introduces the Cainites that he is familiar with, which sets the stage for the second part. "Part Two: A Discourse on the Maturation of Cainites" provides the reader some insight on how a WoD Vampire character "matures" over the course of a thousand years. The values and ambitions of Cainites change with the centuries, some adapt and some linger independent of time, but the things that once motivated the Cainite during life may not be sufficient to occupy him through the wastelands of time.

Campaign Cartographer Gaming Material

Essential to any campaign, maps and graphics enhance the players' understanding of the world they interact with. The Protharsus Campaign Cartographer 2 Map Repository contains many of the maps that I have created over the years to support the games I ran or the games I played in. A little tip to players, you may not be the DM, but if the DM and the other players use the maps you make, you have a decided advantage.

D&D Ravenloft: Fate, Faith, and Fire

Ravenloft: Fate, Faith, and Fire is my first online contribution of roleplaying material. The story is set in the infamous Ravenloft campaign setting where the evil that the player's characters face tempts them at every turn. Ravneloft: Fate, Faith, and Fire takes low-level characters (level 4-6) through a horror-rich encounter with a necromantic cult called the Disciples of Pain. This mystery cult is highly secretive, blending in with the populace of the Core's most developed settlements. Though the cult has yet to threaten the stability of the lands it infests, it gathers followers, wealth, and magical artifacts at an alarming rate. At the chronicle's conclusion, the player's characters get their chance to topple the cult or to become leaders themselves.
